Office of the University Building Official

VA Tech has its own University Building Official, William Hinson Jr. PE CBO, who is the authority having jurisdiction for projects governed by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and administered directly by the University on campus and the sites throughout the Commonwealth owned by the University. The Office of the University Building Official provides technical engineering and code related support and serves as the primary liaison with outside regulatory agencies, working closely with them on code issues that affect the design, construction, and ultimately the approval to occupy a new university facility or maintain existing facilities.

All projects will need to comply with the current edition of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and the amendments made by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In addition, projects need to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the ICC/ANSI A117.1 Accessible and Useable Building Standards. In cases that conflicts may arise between the two standards, the most stringent will apply.

Design professionals are encouraged to contact the university building official or staff early in the design process. Final construction documents will need to be reviewed and approved for code compliance prior to construction. Construction change orders and responses to requests for information will generally need to be reviewed for code compliance prior to construction implementation.
